Online Fashion Design Contest, $1000.00

Chic Star - collaborative collections

Many people have been asking me about the design contest that I enter my designs in, so I decided to create this blog page about it.

The basic 411 is, chicstar.com has several contest to enter. 1. Design contest  2. Alter contest  3. Photo of the week contest and  4. Material pattern contest.

Design contest

Once you submit your design, it goes up with all the other designers for 2 weeks of voting. Registered users that have been verified through paypal can vote only once per design. Once the two weeks are over, you will see your designs final score.

Chicstar picks 6 to 7 designs every two weeks, they call these designs “accepted”. When a design is accepted this means a prototype will be made of this design. When the proto is complete, it goes up for auction on chicstars website. If the design gets good bids and finishes with a good final price, chicstar usually places it into production. Placed in production means you get 1000.00 for copyright of your design and then they sell the design on their website. If the design is not placed in production then you have two choices, either get the proto or you can take a 50 credit. More info

Chicstar usually chooses 1 to 2 winning designs per month for production.

Alter Contest

When a design is not made into production, it may have a second chance by allowing other designers or yourself to make minor alters to the design and be placed back into the voting process. When submitting your original design, there is a check box that gives permission for alters. You do not have to allow alters, it is totally up to you. The process works basically the same as the Design contest, except the monies received for production is split with the person that alters the design and the original designer.

Chicstar also offers a chance at altering their own designs. Designs that were sold on their site by them and not submitted by any one designer.

Material Print Contest

You can submit a pattern/print for fabric. If a designer uses your fabric for a design and it is made for production, you get 100.00. There is a pattern circle that needs to be used, so make sure you download that BEFORE you make your pattern. Also the patterns have to be seamless. More info

Photo Contest

If you have purchased any item on the chicstar website, take a photo and submit it for a chance at 100.00. Just submitting gets you 10 for every pic that is submitted. You can submit a max of 5 pics. A photo is chosen every week. The photo will be featured on chicstar.com homepage.

 1940’s makeup,  we usually think of gorgeous red lips. This, more than any other aspect of 1940’s makeup, defines the era and spans women of all classes from all around the world ,but there’s more to 1940’s makeup than just red lipstick! Here we look at makeup in general during the decade, how the war affected product availability and the canny way women invented and made do to keep up appearances.

Makeup and Wartime

 The decade started with much of Europe at war, with other nations worldwide soon to be joining the battle.
Wartime restrictions gradually impacted everyday life and cosmetics were no exception.
Shortages of alcohol meant less cologne; fats and oils were in in short supply (even soap was rationed) and glycerine was a key ingredient in making munitions.
Even packaging was affected as metal and plastic were in much need for the war effort, and not readily available for the cosmetic needs of a nation.
In fact, during the war, some cosmetic companies made for the war effort e.g. Revlon factories made first-aid kits and dye markers for the US Navy.
When something was unavailable, rather than go without, women made do and found inventive and resourceful ways to meet their cosmetic requirements.
Makeup substitutes included burnt cork for mascara, cochineal or beetroot juicefor lipstick, bi-carbonate of soda for deodorant and gravy browning for leg tint were just some of the creative ways British women kept up appearances.
“The stockings did nothing for morale, they were quite dreadful thick cotton ‘plated’ with rayon. We preferred to tint our legs with dilute gravy browning and draw a ‘seam’ up the back with eyebrow pencil.” [2]
When cosmetic supplies did reach the shops, the word would soon get out and women would queue for hours. Even old theatrical make-up found in second-hands shops was used – it was better than nothing.
“We had no real cosmetics so we dyed our legs to look like stockings and wore beetroot juice for lipstick…” [3]

Lipstick was seen as “good for the morale of the nation” both in Britain and the United States of America.
In the United States, lipstick survived rationing after women protested the War Production Board’s plan to ration it. Women were applauded for the use of lipstick, seen as keeping femininity while carrying out men’s work, and adverts encouraged women to wear lipstick.
The Brits were not so lucky – lipstick was in short supply and very precious!
Petroleum jelly was used to make eye shadow go further, add sheen to lipstick, as well as protect lips from the cold.
“There wasn’t much in the way of make up, just a bit of Pond’s cream and a dab of lipstick.” [4]
Rationing didn’t end as soon as the war finished and was in place in Britain until 1954. However, things slowly but surely came back into regular circulation after the war and more makeup products started to reach the shelves, eagerly bought by women whenever possible.

Influences on Makeup

Creating stockings

As with the hairstyles of the forties, themovie stars influenced the makeup.
Joan Crawford’s lipstick shape, known as “the smear” or Hunter’s Bow, was created by Max Factor for Joan in the 1930s and was much copied.
Going to the pictures was a popular way to spend an evening and the glamour of the movie stars was admired and copied by women everywhere.
Popular makeup brands include names we still know today: Max Factor, Helena Rubenstein, Elizabeth Arden and Estee Lauder. Others were Gala, Bourjois, Coty, Revlon, Yardley and Rimmel.

Makeup Items in the Forties

The overall makeup look of the 1940s was natural, from pale to slightly tanned skin tones, penciled in brows, a lashing of mascara and a rosy glow to the cheeks, topped off with a splash of red lipstick glamour.
Whatever a woman’s background or class, they always made an effort to look groomed with what little they had.

Lips and Lipstick

Red, red, red! This was the colour of the decade, though there was variation in the red, from the classic pillar box to reds with undertones of blue, brown, orange and pink.
One Gala lipstick advert in the late forties, for example, included the shadesLantern Red; Blaze; Heart Red; Heavenly Pink; Red Bunting; Red Sequin; Cyclamen; Cock’s Comb; Ballet Pink; Chestnut. Yup, the wonderful world of red and close friends.
Lipstick was matte so if a shine was required, a dab of petroleum jelly was applied. Lipsticks were also really staining meaning a little lipstick lasted a long time – perfect for wartime skimping.
It wasn’t just the lipstick colour, but theshape of the lips created that defines the 1940s. After the dinky lips of the ’30s, the fashionable forties Hunter’s Bow lip shape was deep, rounded and full, influenced by the stars of the screen. Lucious lips!
After the war, new lipstick colours started to come in, including lighter colours.
Lip pencils started to make their mark in the late ’40s, simply used to create a lip line which was then filled in with lipstick.

Foundation and Powder

Foundation colours were geared towards “healthy glow” providing a natural look or a slight tanned look, like Helena Rubinstein Beach Tan Foundation and matching powder. Having a sun-kissed glow was popular.
Various brands were on the shelves and came in both matte finishes and those advertised as “having a sheen”, but Max Factor’s Pan-Cake was the winner. Initially developed for the film industry, once actresses saw the results on screen they wanted to use Pan-Cake off screen as well. Seeing an opportunity, the Max Factor brand launched Pan-Cake to the public in the late ’30s and it was a huge success.
To set foundation, a pressed powder in a compact would be used. Ladies, inspired by seeing movie stars use makeup in public, would top up their powder as needed.

Eye Shadows and Liner

Wartime meant eye shadows were hard to come by, so homemade solutions were found.
For example, to create a soft and smoky eye shadow, women could burn a candle under a saucer, producing a sooty residue which could then be mixed with petroleum jelly.
After the war, more coloured eye shadows started to be seen, especially blues and greens.
Eye liner started to be seen on the upper eyelids in the late 1940s.

Mascara

Mascara came in liquid, paste and solid cake formulations, with a little brush. Women would spit onto cake mascara, work it into the colour with the brush before applying the resulting mix to their eyelashes. One of the women we spoke to recalled, “You could get a lovely build up with it!”
During the war, burnt cork could be used as a mascara substitute if you’d run out of the block kind. Mascara predominantly came in black, with blue and brown also being produced.

Eye Brows

Brows were kept groomed, shaped and defined with brow pencil. Brows could be arched or rounded in shape. 1940s brows had more to them than the thin brows of the preceding two decades, but were not left overgrown or too wide or full (unlike the fuzzy caterpillars of the ’80s).

Rouge

Cheek colour was called rouge. Coming in little cardboard pots of compressed powder, popular colours were in the peachy, coral and pink tones.
As rouge was not always available during the war, women could use lipstick to add a hint of colour to their cheeks and, as lipstick was staining, it would last quite well.

Nails and Nail Lacquer

Nail vanish was commonly worn by women of all classes and occupations in the 1940s, and women in adverts always had polished nails.
Generally, nails would be painted to match lips.
Nail lacquer colours were mainly in shades of red and pink, including darker reds and corals. Colourless varnish was used as a top coat.
Other colours were available such as gold, dark green, even black, but red and pinks were the commonest colours by far.
Nails were long and manicured with an oval tip. A manicure that had been seen since the 1920s was the half moon, where the nail’s moon and tips were left unvarnished or whitened. This look probably peaked in the 1930s, but could still be seen on some forties fingers.

Legs and Stockings

Stockings were in short supply in wartime Britain, and eventually in the United States as nylon was taken for the war effort.
Never to be beaten, woman created the illusion of stockings with leg makeup and an eyebrow pencil line drawn up the back of the legs to create the stocking seam. This was fiddly, so not everyone used a line – just colouring legs was better than nothing.
Leg makeup was originally made simply to create a tanned look, then became “liquid stockings” makeup due to the lack of real stockings.
Ankle socks were also worn during the day or for work.
“Like the other young women, I drew black lines down the back of our legs to pretend we were wearing stockings. These were imposable [sic] to get until the Americans Forces arrived.” [5]
For those without leg makeup, products like tea, gravy browning and watered down Camp Coffee (made from chicory) were used to stain the legs, and women may have even used it on their faces to add a tanned look. Other makeup could also be used, such as cake makeup for the face. All was wonderful until caught in the rain!

                                            1940’s Hair 

The 1940s Victory Roll hairstyle is often said to acquire its name from the fighter plane maneuvers of World War II.  The planes created an exhaust roll that remained in the sky after leaving the area and inspired many patriotic civilians to adopt the the name in honour of the soldiers returning home. The name has also been linked to the “V” shape the rolls can sometimes mimic when styled in a particular, upright way.

My love of the ornate hairstyles of the 1940s emerged at a very young age. I’ve always idolized the women of yesteryear and their ability to remain glamorous even in times of war and great economic distress. With the onset of World War II, many every day items like food, fabric, and metal were put towards the war effort and rationed, which eventually led to a shortage of styling necessities such as bobby pins.
This lack of resources forced women to become creative and caused pipe cleaners to be used as an alternative to achieve the victory roll style. Victory rolls became popular in the 1940s among every day women as well as the silver screen starlets of the time and were often paired with soft pin curl waves. The popular bobs of the 1930s were beginning to wane and women were embracing longer hair with softer more casual curls.
With an era that required simplicity, a well known Warner Brothers Studios hairstylist Ivan Anderson, invented a haircut that could accommodate the elaborate hairstyles of the time. The cut was entitled ‘the middy’ and consisted of many layers that produced a rounded shape, designed to complement the many preferred curled sets of the day, making the victory rolls an accessible style choice. Although victory rolls are perceived as glamorous, they also served a practical purpose.
Victory rolls became useful during wartime when women were shipped off into the workforce and were required to keep their hair off of their faces. This style proved useful for this very reason, while still maintaining a very feminine appearance. The victory roll has many variations and was decidedly  economical  when it came to both casual and formal styling.
It is no wonder that this diverse technique has made such a strong resurgence in recent times. Vintage enthusiasts around the world sport varying victory roll styles, boldly combining the old with the new and breathing new life into this golden age favourite. Pair it with an embellished clip or flowers for a more decorated look, or simply experiment with the placement  for something more modern.

Spray rubber snakes with gloss paint
Cut rubber snakes into various size halves
Hot glue halves to the sides of styrofoam board
Place doormat over styrofoam board
 
 
Googlie Halloween eyes
 
 
 
Use styrofoam balls of various sizes
Connect the two eyes with toothpicks
Use black marker to draw the eyes
Place them any place you choose
Just remember, they really pop against darker backdrops

Halloween Itsy Bitsy Spider DIY

Materials you will need                                                                                      
1 pack of black tissue paper (I used 8 to 10 sheets depending on the size you would like)                                                                                                         
1 sheet of Black Cardstock
1 sheet of White Cardstock
1 Pipe cleaner or Floral Wire
Some orange ribbon for a hair bow if your making a girl spider
Fishing line or Ribbon to hang your spider from
Your going to start by making a basic tissue pom. I stack 8-10 sheet of tissue paper and then start making 1 inch to 1.5 inch accordion folds back and forth until you have reached the end of your stack.

 
 

Next I like to trim off one of the ends to get my desired length for my tissue pom. The piece you trim off will also be used for making spider legs.
I like mine to be about 17 inches long for a large spider. After you trim off the excess place it to the side to be used later.

 

Then using your pipe cleaner or floral wire secure it around the middle of your stack . At this point I like to attach my fishing line or ribbon for hanging. You can attach it under the pipe cleaner or wire or simply make a loop when your twisting your pipe cleaner or floral wire to feed it through.

 
 
 

The next step is to cut your edges into either a point or a rounded edge. I prefer a point for a spider.

 
 
 
 

Now your ready to fluff! Flip your tissue stack onto its side and fan it out a bit.  Hold it in the middle with one hand and gently begin to pull apart each layer. I like to pull half of the sheets from the top and then switch and pull the other half towards the bottom. If it rips a little don’t panic! You can usually trim it off or just hide that piece when you fluff it.

 
 
 
 
 
 

After all of your layers are separated fluff it a bit to give it a nice even full shape.
So now you have your spider body it’s time to bring it to life..mawww haaaa haaaa!
Using the excess tissue paper that you set aside earlier determine how thick you would like your legs. I did about 1 inch. Trim that stack to your desired width. You will already have it folded into an accordion fold because you trimmed it off of your tissue stack after it was folded. I like a smaller fold on the legs so I unfold the stack and lay it out on the table and repeat the steps to making an accordion fold but this time I do it at about 1/2 inch. This is totally up to your taste so play around a bit and make it how you think you would like it the best. After you fold it again you now have 8 layers of tissue that will become your 8 spider legs.
Using a circle cutter and your black cardstock punch out 8 circle feet. If you don’t have a circle cutter trace something circular and using scissors cut out your circles or try a different shape…again it’s totally up to your creativity! While you have your circle cutter out go ahead and cut 2 circles out of your white card stock for the eyes and then 2 smaller black circles for the pupils of the eyes.

 
 

Separate each tissue layer and using a glue stick attach your circle feet to the bottom of one of your legs. Also glue your pupils onto your white eye’s. Have fun with the placement of your pupils…moving the pupils around will really change the personality of your spider!

 
 

Once all of your legs are ready begin gluing them onto your tissue pom. I like to attach them around the middle of the tissue layers. I did an 8 layer spider so I placed my legs in the middle with 4 tissue layers above the legs and 4 below the legs.

 

Now using your glue stick again attach your eyes. I attach mine on the second layer of tissue so that she looks a little furry around the top of her eyes.

 
 

Now if your making a Spiderella (girl) add a cute little orange bow to her hair.

Ta-da!!! You did it!! Easy cheap and soooo cute! These look adorable hanging outside because the wind will blow it gently and their little legs dance around…lol. Really cute!

Halloween Glitter Slime Monsters DIY

Before we start playing with the slime wash some baby food jars
{ we use the two smallest sizes }
and spray paint the lids.
While they dry make the Glitter Slime.
Slime recipe
1 Elmer’s Glitter Glue
1 Cup Water
1 tsp. Borax
1 Tb Water
Mix 1 tsp. Borax and 1 Cup water together.
You can find the Borax at your local stores in the Laundry section.
empty the Glitter Glue into a bowl
Add 1 TB. Water to the glue and mix it together.
This will help the glue to become a little more flexible.

Right away you will see how the Glitter Slime will start to form.
Don’t leave the slime in the water mixture too long since it will make the slime too hard.
TIP: Don’t throw the extra Borax mixture yet.
If the slime gets too slimy you can put it back inside and it will harden some more.
After the Glitter Slime is done and the jars are full
it is time to decorate them and transform them into monsters.
The first thing we added were the eyes.

Dress the Glitter Slime Monsters up!
We used vinyl to make their hair, mouth and mustache.
You don’t need a vinyl machine for this step, plain scissors will do the job!
We even made some arms for the Little Blue Guy.
Put the lids back on, a little ribbon here, a fake spider and a cupcake liner there,
and here they are the coolest little guys EVER!
…And of course every boy needs a girl.
